Everyone who owns a smartphone is well aware that the one true kryptonite of their devices is the way that it mercilessly chews through fully-charged batteries. While battery technology has come a long way in the past few years, it has continued to struggle to keep up with the increasingly power hungry devices that manufacturers release every six months. Those that seem to be tethered continually to a power outlet may be able to free themselves from their power prison with a new product that uses butane to recharge devices while on-the-go.

Created by a MIT spinoff company called Lilliputian Systems, the butane fuel cell charger will be sold at Brookstone for an undisclosed price (but being sold at a mall tech-boutique, you know it’s going to be pricey). The charger will be able to fully replenish your device’s battery 13 to 14 times before needing a refill. That’s a pretty tall order for a fuel that is most commonly used light tobacco products because of its ability to burn hot and clean. However, after working on the technology for over 10 years, it’s about time that Lilliputian brings it to market.

What makes butane charging possible is a new process places a solid oxide fuel cell onto a silicon wafer, a first for the industry. This membrane allows the conversion of the liquid fuel to usable energy that can charge through any USB port.

As mentioned above, there’s no word on what the pricing for the charging device, but both the company and Brookstone say that the refill cartridges will cost as much as a cup of coffee at Starbucks (they didn’t specify what size). I would hazard a guess that the unit itself will be around $100, with the refills cartridges being around $5.99 which would make the unit very affordable over the long run indeed. This month, the water park’s wave pool was filled with more than a half million gallons of H2O, thanks to the Legoland City Volunteer Fire Department.

The wave pool will give families a chance to catch a wave or just chill in its 1,000-foot-long Build-A-Raft River. Lego friends, palm trees and flowering vegetation will dot the park and visitors will ride tubes down a 375-foot pair of intertwining enclosed water slides into a cool pool.

The on-campus vs. off-campus question for many juniors and seniors wasn’t always the case. Back when the current seniors were freshmen, senior housing wasn’t a guarantee. Now, juniors and seniors have more options when it comes to housing choices; some with less space for more money.

Living off-campus is significantly cheaper and there typically is more room per person. For the sake of argument, I’ll compare my own two-bedroom Hamden Centre Apartment, to a four-person Crescent room at York Hill. Some off-campus deals are better than others, but not everyone gets to live in a university-owned house. Costs and amounts of space will vary depending on whether one lives in an apartment or off-campus house.

First off, there is a large discrepancy between the amount of space per person. Crescent has a 122 square foot common room for four people. My own living room is over 225 square feet. That amounts to four times as much room per person in my apartment for a common living space.

Personal living space is also typically larger off-campus. The master bedroom in my own apartment is about 175 square feet and the smaller bedroom is about 100 square feet. The parent company of American Airlines told a bankruptcy court that it lost $619 million last month as revenue declined from January and failed to offset costs including fuel and labor.

Since filing for bankruptcy in late November, AMR Corp. has lost $1.76 billion including $663 million in expenses related to the Chapter 11 reorganization. That’s more than the $1.08 billion that the company lost in the first 11 months of last year.

AMR disclosed the February numbers in a filing Thursday in U.S. bankruptcy court in New York.

Facing “a very tight monthly budget” after the recession hurt his Michigan solo law practice, John Ceci has cut back on movies and restaurant meals, drives a 1996 Honda and has higher priorities than health insurance.

“I would prefer to purchase a new car rather than pay a monthly health-care premium,” Ceci said in a court affidavit after suing to block President Barack Obama’s health-care law, which requires most people to have insurance by 2014. “I cannot afford both.”

The recession hit Ceci hard enough that, 13 months before his March 2010 lawsuit to overturn the insurance requirement, he filed for bankruptcy relief from almost $120,000 of unpaid balances on 20 credit cards, according to court records.

As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to review the health- care law next week, Ceci’s case is one of three lawsuits, filed by 11 individual plaintiffs, in which federal appeals courts have ruled on the insurance mandate. Four of the people who objected to getting health coverage, including Ceci, have gone to bankruptcy court to discharge debts they couldn’t pay, court filings show.

Questions about who foots the bill for treating the uninsured are key to the Obama administration’s defense of the individual mandate. A Washington state regulatory agency has accused prominent Bellingham commercial real estate agent Ron Bennett of making misrepresentations to convince investors to loan money to his company.

The Washington Department of Financial Institutions contends that Bennett still owes 134 investors a total of $23 million in unpaid promissory notes, which had interest rates ranging from 6 to 12 percent.

In a brief telephone interview, Bennett denied the state’s accusations and said he plans to contest them.

“It’s in the hands of the attorneys,” Bennett said.

In a civil statement of charges filed March 7, DFI contends that Bennett violated state laws prohibiting sale of unregistered securities, and violated anti-fraud provisions of state law by misleading his investors.

Oak Park and River Forest High School has received proposals from two firms, one of which will help determine what to do with its 80-year-old pools.

OPRF is expected to hire one this spring. The two firms — a Canadian company called Stantec and Wisconsin-based Water Technology Inc. — specialize in pool design and engineering. The hiring of a consultant comes as the school tries to comply with ever-changing state guidelines concerning pool safety, as well as ongoing maintenance issues that continue to arise.

OPRF’s pools are well past the average lifespan (about 60 years), explained Robert Zummallen, OPRF’s director of buildings and grounds. Both firms, he noted, have done the kind of structural analysis the high school needs to do.

The school has heard from concerned parents, students and community leaders about the age of OPRF’s two swimming pools. Student swimmers have talked about the the pools’ limitations during on-campus athletic meets. Earlier this year, OPRF suspended all home spring diving due to new federal and state safety regulations that went into effect — OPRF pools no longer have the proper depth for diving.
